Heart of Worship

Imagine being in a group of believers who gather together, not to be just consumers, but ones who all have spent quality time with Jesus throughout the week.  They come prepared to share and participate openly on what Jesus taught since the last time they met.  Where you can worship Jesus through words and song.  Where you can share your hurts and your triumphs.  No fear of judgment, but all come together and be a family.

Back in the late 1990′s a pastor in England felt his congregation was getting apathetic in their worship in song.  He decided to get rid of the sound system and musicians for a period of time.  All they had were their voices.  He encouraged people to come prepared with something to share rather than having them come into the service and be consumers.  Every now and then some would break out in a cappella and heartfelt prayers.  They encountered God in a new and fresh way.

Eventually, the musicians came back and they gained a whole new perspective that worship is all about Jesus.

A musician in that church went into his bedroom and quickly penned the lyrics:

When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come / Longing just to bring something that’s of worth that will bless your heart… / I’m coming back to the heart of worship, and it’s all about You, Jesus”

Here is the video of this song and the man who wrote the song with Jesus’ help, Matt Redman.

wow. powerful story. I love hearing the background context for songs like this. Like “It is well with my soul.” Horatio Spafford lost his kids, his wife, everything… and still was able to say ‘it is well with my soul’.

Good thoughts on consumer mindset of church-goers. I’m going to be pondering that.
